Bedsores

A Deep Tissue Injury

A bedsore is also known as a deep tissue injury, pressure ulcer or a decubitus ulcer. These injuries happen on bony prominences, commonly the sacrum, coccyx, and heels and are caused when staff do not timely turn and reposition a dependent resident and can become so severe that they can get infected and cause septic shock and death. Bedsores are preventable, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has declared them to be “Never Events,” meaning they should never happen in a health care setting.
